Correctional Psychology

Psychological & Brain Sci (psychology) 379 - Spring 2019

This course will introduce students to the correctional environment, and the many psychological considerations involved in the detention, rehabilitation, and reintegration of prison inmates. We will focus heavily on the psychological impact of incarceration, as well the various treatment issues related to inmate rehabilitation. Topics include the dynamics of power and oppression, gang affiliation, inmate management and control, and the problems of sexual assault and suicide among the inmate population. We also will discuss various legal decisions affecting the correctional environment, especially in relation to mental health treatment. Recommended: Abnormal Psychology. This course is fully online. Students enrolled in day classes at Washington University should review the policies of their home division on credit earned for online courses
