Diversity Science Job Talk - "What happens if they come for you?: Mapping misogynoir in developmental discourse"

Abstract: Black women and girls are uniquely vulnerable to racialized gendered violence (i.e., misogynoir) within interpersonal and institutional contexts; yet, fewer studies examine these realities in broader developmental discourse. Drawing on interview data from the Black Women Socialization Study, Dr. Leath will explore the racial socialization messages that Black college women recalled from their mothers on racial discrimination and violence during their formative years. She will discuss the trajectory of this work via two new projects aimed at understanding how Black parents utilize their experiences, identities, and knowledge to transmit messages on navigating and subverting misogynoir.
